We’re past the halfway point for October, and it’s already starting to feel more like autumn—or, in my case, winter. We had our first snowfall! I’m not ready for this. Then again, it does mean that the weather is becoming more amenable to staying inside and watching the latest movies and TV shows out on the myriad streaming services we subscribe to these days.
Every week I scour the internet for the best new movies, shows, cartoons, documentaries and whatever else I can find and post them in this weekend streaming guide. I also go over what’s coming out weekly with a focus on shows that I’m covering. Feel free to share tips and recommendations with me on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. I also tend to include at least one theatrical release a week because I love going to the movies.
Not all of these are shows or movies I’m actually recommending. I haven’t seen all of them and some look genuinely bad. I am merely sharing what’s out there and while I offer my opinion on some of it, this guide is really just to help inform you and let you make up your own minds. You can follow me on this blog as well to stay up-to-date on all my reviews.

ForbesWhat To Watch This Weekend: New Streaming TV Shows And Movies On Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV, Disney+ And MoreBy Erik Kain
Alright, let’s dive right in!
New Shows And Movies
Brothers (Prime Video)
Quite a star-studded cast makes up this caper flick out now on Prime Video. Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin play brothers (which reminds of me Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito playing twins in Twins). They’re joined by Glenn Close and Brendan Fraser in a movie that doesn’t have very many reviews out just yet, but sounds like it could be mildly entertaining.

The Office Australian Remake (Prime Video)
I’ve already discussed just how bad this remake of The Office looks, so I suppose this is less a “what to watch” entry than a “what to avoid” entry. That should be easy for Americans who won’t have access to this series on Prime Video like much of the rest of the world. Oh no! I realize I’m just judging a show by its trailer, but this is a deeply unfunny trailer that appears to miss just about everything that made the British and American versions so great. Maybe it was a bad idea!
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 (Netflix)
I still haven’t watched a single episode of The Lincoln Lawyer, though I know it’s quite popular and people seem to enjoy it and the Michael Connelly books that it’s based on. Season 3 is out now on Netflix with a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is quite good for a third season of anything. Should I watch this? Maybe I should watch this. Will I remember to? That’s a harder question to answer . . . .
Elsbeth Season 2 (Paramount)
Another series I haven’t watched but which seems to get pretty solid reviews from critics and audiences. It’s a spinoff of The Good Wife and Carrie Preston’s character Elsbeth Tascioni from that show. The procedural comedy follows its titular lead as she plays both attorney and detective. Sort of a running theme this weekend!
MaXXXine (Max)
I thought MaXXXine looked pretty interesting but not interesting enough to go to it in theaters. Now the Mia Goth-led horror drama is on Max, which is kind of funny to me. MaXXXine on Max to the max! Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth Debicki and Giancarlo Esposito also star. Of course, this is the third in a trilogy following Ti West’s X and Pearl and I haven’t seen those yet either. I suppose I could do a triple-feature some snowy day.
Rumours (In Theaters)
Cate Blanchett and Charles Dance. What else do you need to know? The film follows leaders of the most powerful nations at the G7 Summit who get lost in the woods—and face unspeakable horrors. It looks quite funny. The line in the trailer when one of the leaders describes the zombies trying to get them and Blanchett’s character replies “Protestors?” “That’s what I thought at first,” he responds. Or the Canadian PM shouting “I love strong women!” as he shoves another man. “I love them too much!” Alicia Vikander, Takehiro Hira and more fill out the cast.
That’s the new stuff, now let’s check out the many series currently streaming, many of which I’m writing about here on this blog.
Ongoing Shows
Disclaimer (Apple TV)
Speaking of Cate Blanchett, she and Kevin Kline star in this psychological thriller created by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón. The show is based on the novel by Renée Knight and follows journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) as a mysterious novel threatens to upend her entire life. Even though I write these guides and this has been on my radar, I’ve totally spaced actually watching it! There’s just been so much to watch lately. I’ll catch up and report back soon. New episodes drop Fridays.
Sweetpea (Starz)
Two episodes of the Ella Purnell murder drama Sweetpea are out now on Starz and so far I’m really enjoying it a lot. Purnell is terrific as young Rhiannon, a British wallflower who struggles to find her voice—and when she does, it’s shockingly deadly. I’ve posted my review of the first episode. New episodes land on Starz every Friday.
Teacup (Peacock)
I’m one episode behind on Teacup, but so far I’m really enjoying the new horror show, which has a similar vibe to MGM’s FROM. Some mysterious entity or calamity has been making the animals act strange, the cars won’t start, and the small cast of characters find themselves trapped in the rural estate of Maggie and James Chenoweth (Yvonne Strahovksi and Scott Speedman). Gore, tension, mystery, infidelity, possession—this has the makings of a great show, but I haven’t made my mind up just yet. I’ve posted my review of the 2-part series premiere.
The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 3 (Prime Video)
We are now three quarters of the way through Season 3 of the best fantasy show on Prime Video: The Legend Of Vox Machina. I like this so much more than Rings of Power or The Wheel Of Time. It’s not even close. The series is hilarious but has a ton of heart—and lots of very inappropriate humor. You can check out my interviews with the cast right here. Three new episodes are available every Thursday on Prime Video.
The Franchise (HBO)
I’m a bit behind on this new HBO comedy as well, but I found the season premiere of The Franchise fairly enjoyable, if not laugh out loud funny. A strong cast and short episodes make this a very digestible little comedy about the shenanigans that go on behind the scenes of a blockbuster superhero movie. New episodes are out Sundays.
Daryl Dixon Season 2 — The Book Of Carol (AMC)
I keep hoping that things will get better in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon—The Book of Carol, but from what I’ve seen halfway through the season already, that’s not going to happen. It’s just an incredibly lazy series, with ludicrous stories and characters who do really stupid crap all the time but are shielded from their bad choices by layer upon layer of plot armor. The Walking Dead used to be must-see TV, but years and years and years of mismanagement and AMC putting its faith in the wrong people have led us to this sorry state of affairs. Read my review of Episode 3 right here. New episodes drop Sundays on AMC.
Agatha All Along (Disney+)
I’m enjoying Agatha All Along more each week and its latest episode was the best since the series premiere—thankfully taking a break from the Witch’s Road and its various ordeals to give us some much-needed backstory and a healthy dose of humor. Kathryn Hahn continues to be an absolute treasure. Read my review of Episode 6 here. New episodes come to Disney+ every Wednesday.
The Penguin (HBO / Max)
I’ve really enjoyed The Penguin so far. I think it’s nice to have a grown-up comic book series like this which we haven’t really had in a long time, maybe not since Watchmen. The really surprising treat that I wasn’t really expecting was just how great Cristin Milioti is as Sofia Falcone, who got her own backstory episode this past week. She’s terrific! Read my review of the most recent episode of The Penguin here. New episodes stream every Sunday.
FROM Season 3 (MGM+)
We’re four episodes into the new season of FROM and it’s everything I hoped for, though I still find myself rolling my eyes from time to time, or basically whenever one of the idiotic extras gets a line. If they do anything different in Season 4, I hope it’s to improve the quality of the townsfolk or just kill off the extras entirely. I’m not convinced we need so many residents, and this show would be a lot tighter if it had a smaller cast that only consisted of people we actually care about. Killing off extras is cheap and lame. Still, I’m loving the super creepy new seasons. You can read my review of Episode 4 here. New episodes stream Sundays on MGM+.
Only Murders In The Building Season 4 (Hulu)
Lately, I’ve been trying to puzzle out who the killer could be in the excellent fourth season of Only Murders In The Building. I’ve successfully spotted some red herrings and guessed at why our favorite podcasting sleuths are on the wrong scent, but I still don’t know who the killer could be—though I have a theory and you’re not gonna like it. We’re almost at the end of the season and I still don’t know for sure, which is always fun in a mystery. New episodes land on Hulu on Tuesdays.
I think we’ve gone on long enough. Let me know if I missed anything!
